First Choice could not do all the good it does without Woodlands Dairy. That’s because Woodlands Dairy is the source of that goodness. They process, produce and package the best quality dairy products for the First Choice brand.

Starting in 1995 as a packaging plant for milk produced on the Woodlands farm, Woodlands Dairy has gone from strength to strength in the years since. From humble beginnings, Woodlands dairy is now one the largest manufacturers of UHT milk in South Africa, and home to First Choice.

Woodlands Dairy is located in Humansdorp, along the world-renowned garden route, and is nestled in the heart of the Eastern Cape dairy region. The team consists of more than 1000 people, and as a trusted producer of dairy products for many years, they pride themselves on innovative thinking, speedy product development, and excellent customer service.

Woodlands Dairy has a strong sustainability profile, and all of its actions are informed by integrity. All of their milk is sourced from pasture fed cows within the Eastern Cape region, and they select farmers that supply milk according to the highest quality standards.

That’s their story, but all you really to know is that all this goodness is passed onto you.

These are the benefits of buying First Choice® long life milk. In fact with First Choice® long life milk, it’s all good.

Health: First Choice® UHT Milk is goodness in a box. Our milk is tested every time it is collected from the farm. What is G-Free?

G-Free is our way of saying that our milk is germ free, and a guarantee of uncompromising quality. That means that our milk is commercially sterile, free of pathogens, bacteria and micro-organisms that can flourish during storage. G-Free is our pledge to deliver Germ Free Milk to all consumers, a reflection of our integrity and commitment to safe milk for the whole family, including toddlers.

Why is G-Free better? OR “G-Free, because pasteurisation alone may not be safe”

Safety, quality and value for money are the key factors of G-Free milk. Superior, multi-layer foil packaging ensures a longer lasting, better tasting, enjoyable treat for the whole family. G-Free is a guarantee of uncompromising quality.

Woodlands Dairy appointed a globally accredited, independent body to sample competitor pasteurised and Woodlands Dairy UHT milk to check for germs. On a national basis, the results showed that First Choice® is free of bacteria and harmful substances. The study also confirmed that pasteurised milk is not always safe. Regarding antibiotics in milk, Woodlands Dairy can guarantee that all their First Choice® milk is free of antibiotics. All milk is tested every time it is collected from the farm.

G-Free and First Choice®

First Choice® UHT milk is the result of a special process which has been designed to extend the shelf life of fresh milk without influencing its nutritional value. UHT milk does not use additives or preservatives to extend the milk’s shelf life.

During the UHT Process, the milk is heated to 140°C for 4 seconds only, then quickly cooled to room temperature (20°C). The high temperature kills all the bacteria in the milk and gives the milk its characteristic creamy taste. The milk is then packaged in sterile Tetra Pak packaging, protecting it from air and light.

First Choice® UHT milk can be stored without refrigeration for 9 months, provided that it is not opened. Once the product has been opened, it must be refrigerated and used within 4 days.

Woodlands_bone strength

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to weaken as they lose vital minerals such as calcium. In time, as the affected bone marrow density is reduced, bones become fragile and break easily. While there are often no noticeable symptoms until after serious, and often irreparable damage has occurred, osteoporosis can now be diagnosed before any symptoms develop. With treatment it is possible to reverse the process and increase a patient’s bone mineral density, thereby reducing the likelihood of serious injury.

In South Africa, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will develop this disease within their lifetime – potentially between 4 and 6 million South Africans. (National Osteoporosis Foundation – South Africa)

Sources of Calcium

The highest concentration of calcium is found in dairy products, containing substantially more than any other non-dairy foods.

Bones gain strength up until the age of 30 and then this process slowly weakens. Give yourself and your family the best chance of remaining strong and avoiding osteoporosis by consuming enough dairy and other calcium rich products, as well as Vitamin D – a vital nutrient that helps your body absorb calcium.

Consumer health vitally important to local dairy

Consumers are becoming more particular about which products they purchase as increasing attention is placed on natural and environmentally-friendly products. Both product and packaging are scrutinised as the world moves towards sustainable business practices.

In light of this, Woodlands Dairy, producer of First Choice dairy products, offers consumers dairy products sourced from naturally pasture-fed cows’ milk, while all carton packaging used has a lower carbon footprint that other types of packaging. Woodlands Dairy, situated in the Eastern Cape, is considered to be one of the most environmentally-conscious brands on the market today.

In addition to being an environmentally-friendly Dairy, all UHT products carry the G-FreeTM stamp of approval meaning that the produce is free of pathogens, bacteria and micro-organisms. “G-Free is our assurance that your milk is safe for the whole family, including toddlers. All milk is tested on each collection from the Dairy,” said Tinus Pretorius, Woodlands Dairy General Manager.

Woodlands Dairy has taken a 360 degree approach to creating environmentally-friendly products. Zero packaging is sent to landfill, while the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo ensures consumers that the product is from a responsible source. In addition, paperboard sourced by Tetra Pak and Nampak Liquide come from well-managed forests. The Forest Stewardship Council is a not-for-profit, independent and non-governmental organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Consumers can enjoy their purchases knowing it has not contributed to the destruction of the world’s forest.

The FSC™ label is the only internationally recognized quality seal for responsible forestry. Each certified organisation, receives a unique FSC-number, hence the different numbers on the Long Life and ESL packs.

“Woodlands Dairy and our suppliers Tetra Pak and Nampak Liquid, have committed to branding Woodlands Dairy dairy cartons with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) mark, the highest and most recognized International certification of responsible Forestry management. All First Choice and Retail brands designs will be modified to include the FSC logo,” said Pretorius.

First Choice offers consumers a range of products, including Flavoured Milk as a firm favourite, already-set Jelly in a box and UHT long-life milk. To view more information, visit www.firstchoice.co.za

New versatile dairy dessert a quick treat

FIRST CHOICE® is committed to nature and adding value to the lives of consumers through its product range offering nutritious and healthy treats for the whole family. The FIRST CHOICE® dairy range is sourced from naturally pasture-fed cows’ milk in the Eastern Cape farmlands of Woodlands Dairy.

In addition to being a healthy dairy choice, FIRST CHOICE® products are naturally good for bones and health and the packaging has a lower carbon footprint than other liquid packaging types. “Our products are G-Free meaning it is free from pathogens and microorganisms that can develop during storage,” said Tinus Pretorius, Woodlands Dairy General Manager.

In continuing its role in providing versatile and nutritious products, FIRST CHOICE® has launched Velvet dairy dessert – a versatile flavoured dessert which can be whipped, shaken, frozen or stirred to create a variety of delectable desserts. “It truly is what you make it,” said Pretorius.

Available in chocolate and vanilla, FIRST CHOICE® Velvet can be made into a creamy milkshake or ice-cream, a decadent mousse or delectable pudding. For an effortless dessert, it can even be consumed as is – provided it has been chilled.

Recipe ideas include, but are not limited to:

  • Creamy chocolate or vanilla milkshake: simply add two parts whipped FIRST CHOICE® Velvet to one part First Choice Low Fat Milk. Mix well and enjoy!
  • Traditional pudding: pour whipped FIRST CHOICE® Velvet into a bowl and chill for two hours. Enjoy the creamy texture as a sweet treat.
  • Creamy vanilla ice-cream: pour whipped FIRST CHOICE® Velvet into a bowl and freeze until set. Serve with baked desserts or in a cone with sprinkles for the kids.
  • Chocolate mousse: dissolve 20ml gelatine in 20ml water and create a smooth paste. Add this to 1L FIRST CHOICE® Chocolate Velvet, mix well and pour into bowls and refrigerate for four hours before serving.

FIRST CHOICE® Velvet is available in 1L packs in both Chocolate and Vanilla flavours and is tartrazine, colourant and MSG-free.
